The Importance of Establishing a Dental Home

Posted by

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child’s first visit to the dentist be when they get their first tooth and no later than their first birthday. The first visit allows for the establishment of a dental home. A Dental home is important for many reasons.
A Dental Home is as simple as an established ongoing relationship between dentist and patient. Continuity of care is a key component of a dental home. It is extremely important that parents have a place to take their child on a regular basis for routine exams and cleanings. Providers recommend that this is done before problems arise. We want their first appointment be a positive experience. We want your kids to love to go to the dentist!

What to Expect
Prevention and education are the primary focus for early visits. During the examination of a young patient a comprehensive oral exam is conducted with a prophylaxis (cleaning) and topical fluoride treatment if necessary. A risk assessment for decay is also done, preventative strategies are developed, and future recall needs are determined. This also provides us a good opportunity to talk to parents about dental development and the milestones their children should reach as they grow. Topics such as tooth eruption, oral hygiene, oral habits and dietary habits that are specifically related to the patient’s age are typically discussed.
