National Children’s Dental Health Month

Posted by

Way back in 1949 The American Dental Association (ADA) declared the month of February National Children’s Dental Health Month. This came 8 years after they had started observing it as just a one day event. Even dentists back then understood the importance of children establishing a healthy oral hygiene routine at an early age. Our caring providers at Capehart Family Dentistry shares the same desire for our young patients to have beautiful, healthy smiles throughout their lives. We enjoy educating parents and children about the benefits of pediatric dentistry and ways to prevent tooth decay.

Preventing Tooth Decay
Tooth Decay is one of the most common childhood diseases and the second most common overall disease after the common cold. Children need to be educated early on that regular brushing, flossing and using mouthwash can prevent bacteria in their mouths. When sugar mixes with already present bacteria in the mouth it activates an acid that attacks the teeth and causes tooth decay. We already know that children love sugary drinks and snacks so it’s very important that we help them establish healthy dental habits early on, along with minimizing their intake of sugar.
A balanced diet of healthy foods such as vegetables, grains, dairy, and protein can also assist in dental health by building up your child’s immune system. Having a healthy immune system can help fight infections such as periodontal disease. Periodontal Disease is a major contributing factor for teeth loss in adults.
